Name: Janine Olivier

BIO: Janine Olivier from Siksika Nation. Although my last name is Olivier, my grandmother is a CrowChief. I am raising 4 children with my husband, and we live on Vancouver Island in the beautiful city of Victoria.
Q: What are your educational & employment achievements?
A: I graduated from Mount Royal University (MRU) in 2016, in the Bachelor of Nursing program. I also did academic upgrading through MRU’s Aboriginal Education Program, and did open studies at University of Calgary. I work as a Registered Nurse in an acute care setting, in the Internal Medicine department. I also work casually at a Detox centre. My nursing degree has allowed me to work in a variety of settings from palliative to mental health, to where I am today. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities I have here, and hope to learn more to one day bring back home.
Q: What programs did you utilize at Old Sun Community College?
A: Siksika Nation Post Secondary Student Support Program
Q: How did Old Sun Community College prepare you for your academic and/or career goals?
A: When I decided to get my education, I was a single mother with 3 kids and knew I needed a higher level of education to provide for my family. I always tell my kids, family and friends, I would not have been able to do this without the help and support of OSCC. Although there were many challenges, in the end I was able to get through it. It was a short term struggle, to get to where I need to be today. OSCC was helpful every step of the way, and also very encouraging. Keeping open communication with OSCC about my progress, and challenges helped me power through.
Q: What are the benefits of Old Sun Community College in Siksika?
A: Siksika is very fortunate to have post-secondary education available within the community, and not having to travel elsewhere for education. It allows the students to learn, but also be engaged with their community. It allows students to bring forward new ideas that they learn from their community and apply it to their education. OSCC can help students achieve their academic goals, which will also apply to their career goals. The opportunity that was invested in me allowed me to gain self confidence and knowledge, in which I hope my children will follow suit.
