Social Work Program

Program Description

COMING SOON

BACKGROUND

Since the early 1990s, Knowledge Keepers and faculty members at OSCC have contributed to a variety of community and regional social work education projects. From 2012-2014, OSCC hosted the Maskwacis Cultural College (MCC) Diploma of Social Work program. Graduates of this cohort are now employed as social workers within our community, several have completed BSW degrees and others are engaged in MSW studies.

As a member of the First Nations Adult and Higher Education Consortium (FNAHEC) Social Work Task Force (SWTF), OSCC participated in the creation of an Indigenous BSW (IBSW) program. The IBSW is currently offered at the following FNAHEC member institutions: Maskwacis Cultural College, Red Crow Community College, University nuhelot’įne thaiyots’į nistameyimâkanak Blue Quills and Yellowhead Tribal College. Dependent upon community interest and resource availabilities, we, at Old Sun, also look forward to delivering the IBSW program within the near future.

Celebrating an Historic Agreement – Social work education programs delivered in public post-secondary institutions are accredited through the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE) and the IBSW is accredited through the National Indigenous Accreditation Board (NIAB). On October 29, 2019, NIAB and CASWE signed an agreement on mutual honouring of accredited degrees. The agreement supports the portability of education by affirming that any master’s or baccalaureate social work degree from an educational program accredited by the two organizations will be accepted as substantially equivalent. Please see the media release for further details. If you are interested in pursuing social work education at either the diploma or undergraduate level, please contact Kendrick Three Suns.
